Nurture the meadow through the seasons, and nature will reward you in full bloom.

Thoughtful aftercare will ensure that your wildflowers return year upon year, from timely cutting to keeping fertility low, which encourages flowers to bloom and return each year. With a little patience and the right approach, your meadow will reward you year after year with colour and diversity of species.

Seasonal cuts to encourage your meadows growth.

Ongoing care is key to a meadow that thrives year after year. This helps encourage a rich mix of flowers and fine grasses, while gently keeping more aggressive weeds like ragwort, thistles and docks from taking over and outcompeting your wildflowers.

After mowing, it’s important to remove the cuttings so sunlight can reach young seedlings beneath. Earlier in the season, this can be done straight away, but later on it can be beneficial to leave the cuttings for a few days to allow seed to drop back into the soil. Just be careful not to leave them too long, as rotting cuttings can increase soil fertility and encourage grasses and weeds to take hold, competing with your wildflowers.

First Year of Sowing:

In order to help young seeds establish and flower, cut your lawn/meadow after the first 6-8 weeks, mowing down to approximately 5cm. Mow the area every couple of months throughout the first Summer to keep grasses in check and allow your wildflowers the light and space they need to thrive.

If your meadow mix includes annuals, don’t carry out the first cut until the flowers have the opportunity to flower which in turn supports pollinators and allows your meadow to settle into a healthy balanced ecosystem.

Seasonal Care:

Once established, a wildflower meadow thrives with a simple seasonal care regime. An annual Summer/Autumn cut, timed after flowering and seed set, helps stop grasses taking over the area, and encourages a diverse mix of species to return year after year. This steady approach maintains the open structure that wildflowers need to flourish.

As the seasons turn, an Autumn or early Winter cut tidies away spent growth and prepares the meadow for rest. Removing cuttings keeps soil fertility low, and your meadow will return stronger and more diverse.
