When is the best time to sow wildflower meadow seed?

The best time to sow wildflower seeds is either in Spring or late Summer/early Autumn. Preferably the soil is consistently above 9-12°C and moist, giving the seeds the best chance to germinate. It is essential to keep the soil damp until the seedlings are firmly established.

Sowing in Autumn is often preferred due to the the recent dry spring seasons and reduced weed competition. However, it is recommended if sowing on heavy soils, that this takes place in Spring rather than Autumn when seeds are more likely to rot. Specific wildflower species, including Yellow Rattle, require a cold period (vernalisation) to germinate the following flowering season.

Will wildflowers return year after year?

With regular maintenance, perennial wildflowers will return each year. Annuals complete their lifecycle in a single season. Annuals may re-appear the next year, if they self-seed or if you choose to harvest the seed from the flower heads and sow the next year.

How do I choose the best wildflower mixture for my garden/site?

Selecting the right mixture is crucial to creating a vibrant wildflower meadow. With different options available, it can be confusing! Firstly start off by assessing the soil type and growing conditions in the chosen area. Some varieties of wildflowers are better suited to specific soil types (clay, chalk, or sandy soils) and conditions (shaded, coastal, full sun).

Can wildflowers be successfully sown into grass?

Yes you can, but preparation is key. Sowing in Autumn is the best time to sow wildflowers into existing grass. As it gets colder the grass growth will slow down allowing the wildflower seed to germinate without having to compete with vigorous grass growth.

Before sowing, cut the grass very short and expose up to 50% of the soil by scarifying or chain harrowing. Select and sow a 100% wildflower mixture which is most suited to the area and keep the soil most until the seedlings are established.

Will my Wild Seed Scotland meadow mix bloom in its first season?

This all depends on whether the chosen mixtures has annual species included. Annuals will give you instant and vibrant colour in the first year while you won't see much from the perennials. In the first year, the perennials main focus is to grow and develop their root systems, however they will flower in the second year.

When is the best time to sow grass seed?

The best times to sow grass seed are the Spring and Autumn Season. The ground temperature needs to be 6-8°C for the seeds to germinate. Generally this is when the air temperature is consistently above 10°C. It is crucial the ground stays moist by either rainfall or watering once the seeds have been sown. It is ideal to sow after rainfall or when rainfall is forecast, if watering is not an option.

How do I repair bare patches in my lawn?

The best time to repair bare patches is either the Spring or Autumn. Start by raking the bare area and sowing the seed at the recommended sowing rate. Either roll the soil after sowing or use your feet to firm the ground, and lightly water the area. The area must be damp during the germination period. While the grass is establishing, keep off the patches for approximately 6 weeks.

How do I pick the grass seed mixture which suits my site best?

Firstly, take a look at the location and usage for the area.  Does it receive a lot of foot traffic or is it shady? Are you aiming for a decorative lawn, pasture use or cutting for silage? There are mixes that are optimal for every need.

Do I need to do any ground preparation to overseed my paddock?

We recommend removing any existing debris from the area, and before sowing remember that seed needs soil contact, and the existing sward must be short, this can be achieved by mowing or grazing. This in turn will allow the seeds to germinate and grow successfully. As a rule of thumb, for overseeding an area, we would usually recommend half the recommended sowing rate.
