Creating a strong, healthy lawn starts with a grass seed mix designed for your space.

At Wild Seed Scotland, we know that a successful lawn starts from the ground up. By selecting an amenity lawn seed mix that matches your soil, setting and level of use, you give your grass the best possible foundation. Our thoughtfully developed blends make the process straightforward. Helping you establish a resilient, well-kept lawn that performs season after season.

Matching Your Lawn Mix to Your Lawn

Creating a successful amenity lawn starts with understanding your soil and how the space will be used. While many grass species are versatile, certain mixtures are better suited to specific conditions. Selecting the right option gives your lawn the best possible start. It’s also important to match the mix to the setting. Shaded areas benefit from specially selected shade-tolerant varieties, high-traffic spaces require hard-wearing blends built for durability, while fine lawns call for slender-leaved species for a neater finish. With the right amenity lawn option chosen for your landscape, you’ll establish a dense, resilient sward that looks smart and performs reliably throughout the seasons.

Strong roots start with well-prepared soil.

Preparing your ground properly sets the foundation for a strong, long-lasting lawn. Begin by clearing the area of stones, weeds and debris, giving your seed a clean start. Take time to improve the soil before sowing by cultivating to around 15cm to relieve compaction, improve drainage and create a healthy growing environment. Rake and level the surface carefully, firming it until it’s even underfoot. Allow the ground to settle so any natural sinkage can be corrected. Finally, create a fine, crumbly tilth with a light rake and apply a pre-seeding fertiliser to provide the nutrients your grass. Helping you new lawn establish evenly and grow into a dense, resilient sward.

Start Right. Grow Strong.

Choose a still, dry day for sowing to ensure your seed is spread evenly and lands exactly where it’s needed. For consistent coverage, divide the area into manageable square metre sections. Measure out 50g per square metre, splitting this into two equal applications. Sowing half in one direction and the remainder at right angles. This cross-sowing method helps create an even, balanced sward from the outset. For larger areas, a calibrated seed spreader can make the job quicker and more uniform. Once sown, lightly water with a fine spray if rain isn’t due, taking care not to displace the seed. With careful application and a little patience, your lawn will establish evenly and reliably.

Choosing the Perfect Time to Begin

The best times to sow grass seed are the spring and autumn season. The ground temperature needs to be 6-8°C for the seeds to germinate. Generally this is when the air temperature is consistently above 10°C. It is crucial the ground stays moist by either rainfall or watering once the seeds have sown until the seedlings have established. Sowing in autumn is favoured when there is regular rainfall unlike the last couple of spring seasons we have had. It is ideal to sow after rainfall with upcoming rainfall forecasted if watering is not an option. Not only does the ground will have the summer's warmth, the weed growth would have slowed down meaning less competition.
